IRNA
London, Dec. 4, IRNA - The war against terrorist has cost Britain nearly Dlrs 10 billion, Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown said Thursday. "The total spent and committed so far for the war on terror and our operations in Iraq and Afghanistan is around Pnds 5.5 billion," he told MPs during a debate on the government`s legislation programme for the new parliamentary year. Brown said that the spending on the war in Afghanistan and the war on terror, both international and domestic, was "approaching Pnds 2 bn." In addition, he said that he had set aside Pnds 3 bn to fund the cost of military operations in Iraq. Unconfirmed reports have been circulating that the cost of the Iraq war and subsequent occupation could reach Pnds 6 bn over the next three years and that the British government were seeking budget cuts to pay for the extra cost. The chancellor`s announcement of the estimate comes ahead of his annual pre-budget statement next week, when he said he would publish further updates of the figures. HC/215 End
