72 killed in clashes in Nepal

New Delhi, Dec 4, IRNA -- Nepalese troops gunned down 66 Maoists rebels in a cross firing which also left six security personnel dead in south western of the country. According to the Press Trust of India (PTI), the 50 rebels were killed by a joint team of Nepalese security forces at Pandong area of Kailali district, 500 kms west of Kathmandu, as the troops launched an operation against Maoists in their training center at the district. Some of the bodies of rebels were carried away by Maoists, sources said. Sources at Nepal`s Army Headquarters said, four policemen and two armed forces personnel were also killed while 10 other security men were injured in the clash which started Tuesday night and continued till Wednesday morning. They said, 15 bodies of the rebels have been recovered from the site. Meanwhile, Nepalese Defense ministry said that 16 Maoist rebels were killed elsewhere in separate encounters with the security forces. Six rebels were killed in Palpa district, four in Solukhumbu district, three in Arghkhachi district, two in Rukum and one in Udaypur district, Nepalese Defense ministry said. Some 8,500 persons have been killed in Nepal since Maoists launched `people`s war` in 1996. IND/AH/210 End
