UN mission in DR Congo liberates prisoners and arrests militia leaders

3 December The United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) reported today that it has successfully liberated 37 people being held by local militias in the country's northeast.

A UN spokesman told the daily press briefing in New York that MONUC's operation occurred yesterday near the town of Djugu, northwest of Bunia.

MONUC rescued three civilian prisoners being held in an underground jail and 34 women being held as sexual slaves in a camp run by the Nationalist Integrationist Front/Ituri Popular Resistance Forces.

According to MONUC, militia leaders were also arrested and a number of weapons and anti-personnel mines were seized.
