MLG 27 Light Naval Gun: A new standard for the German Navy First systems now being delivered
12/01/2003
The German Navy is currently taking delivery of the first of a total of 83 MLG 27-type Light Naval Guns, made by Mauser-Werke Oberndorf Waffensysteme GmbH.
This remotely controlled system was designed for close-range self-defence of surface combatants and smaller naval craft, enabling the effective engagement of fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, speed-boats and nearby on-shore targets, coupling excellent accuracy with devastating effectiveness.
In particular, the gun's designers took into account the need to defend against the asymmetric threat posed by terrorists (e.g. speed-boat attacks).
An optimum combination of the high-performance Mauser BK 27 revolver gun with state-of-the-art ammunition, precise fire control and a highly dynamic mount makes the MLG 27 one of the most advanced naval guns on the market today.
Step by step, the MLG 27 is set to become the standard gun of the German Navy, gradually replacing the 20mm and 40mm guns currently in service, and which can only be operated manually.
Mauser-Werke Oberndorf Waffensysteme GmbH, a subsidiary of Rheinmetall DeTec AG of Ratingen, Germany, is one of the world's leading suppliers of medium-calibre automatic cannon systems.
