BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Two schools in the Al Adhamiya neighborhood here now have new computers and Internet capabilities thanks to some help from soldiers of V Corps' 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Armored Division.

Soldiers in the communications platoon of the battalion's Headquarters and Headquarters Battery decided to do their part by putting their expertise to use in the reconstruction process here.

"When we first got here, we found out (the schools) were missing a lot of supplies," said 2nd Lt. Lucian Ilardi, a 2/3rd signal officer from Long Island, N.Y. "Our forte is computers and automation, and we decided to go that route."

Ilardi says he asked his chain of command to buy and install the equipment. As a result, he added, each of the two schools received $10,000 for the project.

The funds allowed the schools to get computers, printers, scanners, a satellite system for Internet access, and air conditioning to keep the equipment functioning properly in the oppressive Iraqi heat.

Ilardi claims that the Internet café at the girls' school in Al Adhamiya was the first public Internet café in Baghdad when it opened in August, and will be a great step ahead for the students.

"I think the Internet, most of all, is going to open up their world here," said Ilardi.
