USS Vandegrift visits Himeji

HIMEJI, Japan -- USS Vandegrift (FFG 48), arrived here Nov. 28 for a regularly scheduled port visit.

While in port, the ship's approximately 300 crewmembers will have a chance to participate in friendship and goodwill activities such as community service projects.

Located on the central Japanese island of Honshu, Himeji is close to major cities such as Kobe and Osaka.

Vandegrift is an Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided missile frigate. The warship is a multi-mission platform that can operate two helicopters for undersea warfare and reconnaissance missions.

Commanded by Cmdr. Richard Rogers, Vandegrift recently completed a historic visit to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, becoming the first U.S. warship to visit the country in more than 30 years. Vandegrift is part of the Kitty Hawk Carrier Strike Group, permanently forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.
