11 separatists killed in fratricidal clashes in India`s Manipur
IRNA
Guwahati, Nov 19, IRNA -- At least 11 separatists were killed in a fratricidal clash between two rival groups in India`s restive north eastern state of Manipur, officials Wednesday said. A police spokesman said the 11 dead bodies were recovered from a thickly forested area Tuesday near village Kumbi, 50 kilometers south of Manipur`s capital Imphal. "The dead militants belonged to the outlawed People`s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) and probably the killing took place Monday," Manipur`s police chief Joychandra Singh told IRNA by telephone from Imphal. "The killings are a result of fratricidal clashes between two rival factions of the PREPAK." The PREPAK is a frontline rebel group fighting for an independent homeland for the majority Metei community in Manipur, bordering Myanmar. The PREPAK is led by two different guerrilla leaders and both the factions are now engaged in a bitter turf war for territorial supremacy in the area. Manipur, a state of 2.4 million people bordering Myanmar, is home to at least 19 guerrilla groups with their demands ranging from greater autonomy for particular ethnic groups to independence from India. More than 10,000 people have died in the state in the past two decades. /211 End
