Non-proliferation clause in EU treaties
IRNA
Brussels, Nov 18, IRNA -- The EU has decided to include a clause on nuclear non-proliferation in all its treaties with third countries. Italian foreign minister Franco Frattini told a press conference in Brussels Tuesday that EU foreign ministers in their meeting on Monday approved an "important decision." "We decided that in all agreements and in all treaties, joint and multilateral agreements in which the EU is a party, we will ask for the inclusion of a non-proliferation clause," said Frattini whose country holds the current EU Presidency. The move is aimed at curbing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and combating terrorism, he explained. US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, sitting next to Frattini during the joint press conference welcomed the EU initiative saying "it shows that we are coming together to work together to deal with the major threats that we are now facing." Currently the EU includes a human rights clause in all agreements with third countries. NK/211 End
