USS Vandegrift arrives in Vietnam for historic visit

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam -- USS Vandegrift (FFG 48) arrived here Nov. 19 for a scheduled port visit. This visit marks the first U.S. Navy ship visit to Vietnam since 1973. It symbolizes the normalization of relations between the two nations and will provide the crew with a chance for sightseeing and cultural exchanges.
Vandegrift is an Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided missile frigate. The warship, with a crew of approximately 200 Sailors, is a multi-mission platform that can operate two helicopters for undersea warfare and reconnaissance missions.
A part of the Kitty Hawk Carrier Strike Group, Vandegrift is commanded by Cmdr. Richard Rogers and is forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.
