IRNA
Guwahati, Nov 18, IRNA -- At least seven militants were killed and two more, including a woman rebel and a federal soldier, critically injured in separate gun battles in India`s troubled northeast, officials said on Tuesday. A police spokesman said two tribal separatists belonging to the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) were killed in an encounter Monday by security forces in western Tripura. Troops raided a house and a fierce encounter took place with militants firing at the soldiers from inside the house, a police official said in Tripura`s state capital Agartala adding the troops retaliated by killing two separatists. A woman rebel and a soldier were injured in the encounter, while a rebel trying to escape was arrested. In another incident in Tripura Sunday night, two NLFT rebels were killed when they clashed with the rival All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) separatists. Both the NLFT and the ATTF are fighting for independent tribal homeland in Tripura and carry out their hit-and-run guerrilla strikes from bases in adjoining Bangladesh. India and Bangladesh share a 856 kilometer long unfenced border along Tripura state. In the adjoining state of Assam, three militants belonging to the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) were killed in an encounter Sunday. Police recovered AK-56 rifles and grenades from the dead rebels. The ULFA is fighting for an independent homeland in Assam and carry out their strikes from bases inside adjoining Bhutan. More than 20,000 people have lost their lives to insurgency in Assam and Tripura during the past two decades. /217 End
