General Dynamics Integrated Marine Solutions Business Achieves Capability Maturity Model Integration Level 5

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Integrated Marine Solutions business of General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems has achieved a Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI®) Level 5 rating – the highest possible – in the areas of systems engineering, software engineering, integrated product and process development, and supplier sourcing.

Only four other companies are known to have completed CMMI appraisals in all these areas. This CMMI rating follows the achievement earlier this year of the Capability Maturity Model (CMM®) Level 5 rating for software.

The Integrated Marine Solutions business, based in Pittsfield, Mass., develops, produces and supports shipboard systems, including strategic and tactical weapon control systems and surface combatant core mission systems. Key programs include the core mission system for the Littoral Combat Ship, fire control and guidance systems for ballistic missile submarines (SSBN), and the attack weapon control system for guided missile submarines (SSGN).

"General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems believes in continuous process improvement. Applying our world-class processes to new programs such as Littoral Combat Ship and existing programs such as SSGN indicates to our customers that we have reliable and repeatable processes that reduce costs, lower risk, and improve product quality," said John Stewart, president of General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems.

The Software Engineering Institute (SEISM), a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense and operated by Carnegie Mellon University, manages the CMMI appraisal process. An independent SEI-trained team led by ProcessWorks, Inc. determined the General Dynamics CMMI rating announced today.

CMMI integrates multiple capability maturity models into a single improvement framework of standards that measure an organization's ability to reduce the cost of performing assessments and implementing improvements. CMMI best practices enable organizations to link management and engineering activities to business objectives, expand product life cycle and engineering activities to ensure that products and services meet customer expectations, and incorporate lessons learned from additional areas of best practice (e.g., measurement, risk management, and supplier management). A recent SEI report provided quantitative evidence that CMMI-based process improvement can result in benefits in cost, schedule, quality, customer satisfaction and return on investment.

General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems is a business unit in the General Dynamics Information Systems and Technology group. General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, employs approximately 66,900 people worldwide and anticipates 2003 revenues of approximately $16.1 billion. The company has leading market positions in mission-critical information systems and technologies, land and amphibious combat systems, shipbuilding and marine systems, and business aviation.

Capability Maturity Model, Carnegie Mellon, CMM, and CMMI are registered in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office by Carnegie Mellon University. CMM Integration and SEI are service marks of Carnegie Mellon University.
