INTRO: Two U-S Army Blackhawk helicopters have crashed near the northern city of Mosul in Iraq. The U-S military says it does not yet know if there have been any casualties. V-O-A Correspondent Alisha Ryu reports from Baghdad.

TEXT: U-S military officials say the two Blackhawks crashed early Saturday evening, just west of Mosul. Both helicopters belonged to the 101st Airborne Division, which is in charge of security in the area.

Military officials say the crash site has been secured and an investigation is under way to determine the cause. Eyewitnesses say they saw the helicopters collide in mid-air.

Mosul lies near the Syrian border and has been the site of numerous attacks against U-S forces in recent weeks. But the U-S military says there is no evidence that suggests the helicopters have been shot down by insurgents.

On November 2nd, insurgents near the city of Fallujah, west of Baghdad, shot down a U-S Army Chinook transport helicopter, killing 16 soldiers.

Five days later, six more American soldiers were killed when insurgents shot down a Blackhawk helicopter near Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit. (Signed)
