Indian Navy to set up base for UAVs in Andamans
IRNA
New Delhi, Nov 10, IRNA -- The Indian Navy is planning to set up a base for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the Andaman Islands in India`s Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands in Bay of Bengal to increase its surveillance capacity in the region. According to the Asian Age, a New Delhi-based English daily, Indian Navy, already has a UAV base at Kochi in the Southern Indian State of Kerala, at the headquarters of the Southern Naval Command on the western coast. The new base at Andamans will help Indian Navy to increase its surveillance ability in a region which is of enormous strategic significance to this country. Indian defense forces have been extensively using Israeli-built UAVs, which have been pressed into service by the Army along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir as an effective tool for surveillance purposes. The move will counter the Chinese maritime reconnaissance and electronic station on Coco Island in the Bay of Bengal, through which it can monitor Indian naval and missile launch facilities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. /211 End
