Annan extends mandate of his special envoy for Great Lakes region6 November United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan intends to extend the mandate of his Special Representative for the African Great Lakes Region, Assistant-Secretary-General Ibrahima Fall, until the end of next year, according to a letter released today.
Mr. Annan told the Security Council that Mr. Fall has been building on previous work by continuing consultations with the African Union, regional and international organizations and interested and concerned countries on a proposed international conference on peace, security, democracy and development in the region.
"He is currently working with the countries of the region in order to expedite the convening of the conference," Mr. Annan says, adding that he intends to extend Mr. Fall's mandate until 31 December 2004.
