Germans in talks with Israelis over delivery of two submarines: daily
IRNA
Berlin, Nov 6, IRNA -- Germany`s leading shipyard company HDW is reportedly involved in negotiations with Israel to construct two more German `Dolphin` submarines which could be modified to carry nuclear warheads on them, the daily Berliner Zeitung said Thursday. A spokesman for HDW confirmed that the German government had given green light for "technical talks" to prepare the business deal. Germany had already delivered three specifically `Dolphin` submarines in 1999 and 2000. According to earlier press reports, the German government had also been aware of the fact that Israeli submarine engineers had modified the launching pads of three German submarines at the HDW dockyard in the north German city of Kiel. American and Israeli officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed earlier the missile modification on the German submarines. Although the German government is banned by law to export arms to crises regions, Germany has become one of Israel`s major arms suppliers, with exports having totaled some 900 million dollars between 1998 and 2001.
