Hamilton Sundstrand electric power system for F-35 completes Critical Design Review

WINDSOR LOCKS, USA- North America, Connecticut, Nov 5, 2003

Hamilton Sundstrand has successfully completed the Critical Design Review (CDR) for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Electrical Power Generation and Conversion System.

Hamilton Sundstrand’s equipment generates the main electrical power for theF-35, referred to as the “More Electric Fighter,” and provides for main engine starting plus power for flight-critical aircraft systems.

The main F-35 generator supplies 160 kW of 270 Vdc (volts direct current) power, equivalent to the energy used by a total of 50 homes. The company demonstrated full electrical power operation of all equipment as part of the CDR review.

“This milestone demonstrated to Lockheed Martin and the Joint Strike Fighter Program Office the maturity of the program and the readiness to proceed to build and test JSF hardware for first flight,” said Mark Spana, general manager of the Electric Systems Defense Systems Enterprise at Hamilton Sundstrand in Rockford, Illinois. “We are very proud to be a part of the Lockheed Martin team.”

Frank Kirkland, Lockheed Martin director of JSF vehicle systems, said, “We are very pleased with the outstanding progress that Hamilton Sundstrand has made at this point in the program.”

Hamilton Sundstrand is the premier supplier of 270-volt dc electric power generation, conversion and distribution systems with products on the Lockheed Martin F/A-22, the Boeing/Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche helicopter and the X-45C unmanned combat air vehicle.

Besides the electrical power equipment, Hamilton Sundstrand also is supplying a significant amount of other systems for the F-35, including the engine controls, gearbox and externals for the Pratt & Whitney F135 engine and electronic controls for flight actuation systems.
