Armed Kashmiri group deplores UN `indifference`
IRNA
Islamabad, Nov 3, IRNA -- Deploring the UN`s "indifferent attitude", Kashmir`s armed organization Hizbul Mujahideen has sought global community`s role in resolving long-standing Kashmir issue. Central Spokesman Saleem Hashmi told IRNA Tuesday that the Kashmiris either be given UN-mandated right to self-determination or a tri-partite talks be facilitated to resolve the Kashmir issue. He requested the peace-loving nations across the globe to join their voice with the Kashmiris for realization of their right to self- determination. Brushing aside India`s description of the armed movement as terrorism, he said the freedom movement was indigenous in character, enjoying backing of the Kashmiri people. "You can`t keep sustained pace of the movement if the local population is not backing you," he added. "The morale of Kashmiri fighters is as high as before, as they know their struggle`s goal is genuine and legitimate to rid their nation of occupation." He called upon India to check on-going activities of the Indian security forces against the Kashmiri civilians, men women and children. To a question about the Pakistan-India confidence-building measures, he contended that the real issue was Kashmir, on which New Delhi is "non-committal to resume meaningful dialogue" with Islamabad and Kashmiri leadership. Kashmir is a disputed territory between Pakistan and India. Both have been locked in rivalry since their independence in August 1947 and two of the three wars they fought were on Kashmir. Islamabad has offered to resume dialogue with New Delhi, but India links it with end to what it alleges as "cross border infiltration" from Pakistan to India-administered Kashmir. Pakistan rejects the Indian assertion and calls for monitoring of the Line of Control by a neutral body, to which India does not agree. MHA/TSH/212 End
