Iran, EU review developments in Afghanistan

Tehran, Nov 2, IRNA -- European Union special representative on Afghanistan Francis Vendrell conferred here Sunday with Head of Majlis Commission on National Security and Foreign Affairs Mohsen Mirdamadi on latest developments in Afghanistan. According to the Cultural Bureau and Public Relations Department of Majlis, at the meeting, Mirdamadi underlined that the Islamic Republic of Iran supports Afghan central government, adding that presence of a powerful central government in Afghanistan would guarantee Iran`s security and national interests. Referring to existing problems in reconstruction of war-shattered Afghanistan, he said to remove the obstacles and help restore stability and security in Afghanistan, the international commmunity should pay more attention to the country`s reconstruction process. Ignoring current developments in Afghanistan would lead to further insecurity and conflicts, Mirdamadi said. Describing the views of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the European Union on the issue of Afghanistan as being very close, he voiced Iran`s readiness to further broaden cooperation with the European Union in this connection. Expressing concern about incrase in poppy cultivation in Afghanistan, he called on the international community to serioully deal with the issue. Vendrell, for his part, expressed concern about recent conflicts in Afghanistan, adding that spread of insecurity in the country would lead to preventing UN organizations as well as NGOs from rendering humanitarian aid to the country. Vendrell voiced the EU`s willingness to further expand cooperation and exchange views with the Islamic Republic of Iran on developments in Afghanistan. MM/212 End
