Pakistan Islamists protest military operation
IRNA
Islamabad, Oct 28, IRNA -- Islamic opposition groups in the National Assembly on Tuesday protested against military operations in areas bordering Afghanistan and alleged the locals are being victimized under the pretext of al-Qaeda. A lawmaker belonging to Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) speaking in the Lower House raised the issue of the operation and claimed that local people were targeted during the operation. On October 3rd, Pakistan military launched a major operation in South Waziristan tribal area, bordering Afghanistan, against al-Qaeda and killed 8 suspects and arrested 18 others. Two Pakistani soldiers were also killed. Afghan government complains that Taliban and al-Qaeda suspects cross into Pakistani territory after launching attacks inside Afghanistan. According to the opposition member of parliament Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, operation has also been launched in parts of southwestern Baluchistan province and northern areas, bordering China. Speaker of the National Assembly Chaudhry Ameer Hussain intervened and stopped Ahmed from speaking against the operation. It infuriated the opposition members and they started chanting slogans. The opposition lawmakers then staged walkout of the House. Later addressing a news conference the MMA deputy chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed announced that the alliance will organize country-wide rallies to condemn the military operation in tribal areas. The opposition deputies will stage rally in front of the parliament on Friday. The major opposition parties, the Peoples Party Parliamentarians and Muslim League supported the MMA plan for protest rallies. /TSH/AH/210 End
