Kabul to free 140 Pak prisoners next week

Islamabad, Oct 28, IRNA -- After clearance by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Afghanistan is all set to release 140 Pakistani prisoners on November 3-4. An Islamabad-based newspaper, Pakistan Observer, said in its Tuesday issue that FBI had formally given a clean chit to Kabul for release of the prisoners, kept in different Afghan jails. Prisoners held on different charges, reportedly belonged to Pakistan`s biggest province Punjab. Hundreds of Pakistanis, mainly from religious institutions had crossed into Afghanistan to fight alongside Taliban against US-led forces, some two years back. Scores of these were killed, many taken prisoners. Over 500 Pakistanis were released in phases after Hamid Karzai assumed power, following the fall of Taliban regime. According to the newspaper, dozens of Pakistani prisoners had died due to inhuman conditions in Afghan jails. MHA/TSH/210 End
