BAE SYSTEMS Receives $18.3 Million Contract To Provide Sensor Systems For U.S. Navy Helicopters
27 Oct 2003
BAE Systems Integrated Solutions has been awarded an $18.3 million contract to build Replacement Attitude Heading Reference System (R-AHRS) units for U.S. Navy HH-60 and SH-60 helicopters.
The units provide helicopter pilots with vital information on attitude and heading angles during operation in instrument flight conditions, especially at night or during poor-visibility conditions. The system also provides the autopilot with essential signals required for helicopter stabilisation and control.
The newly redesigned units offer significantly improved output accuracy and system reliability through use of state-of-the-art inertial sensors and processing algorithms. The design also improves safety and maintainability by providing extensive built-in test coverage for timely identification of potential malfunctions.
Were very pleased that the Navy selected us as the winner in this competitive award, said Tom Herring, vice president of BAE Systems Integrated Solutions. This contract will strengthen our core sensor systems business and will support the companys long-term growth objective for this product line.
Each R-AHRS unit consists of a strap-down inertial measurement unit, a processor, and an external magnetometer. The system incorporates BAE Systems unique AHRS algorithms, whose functions include automatic in-air magnetometer calibration.
The contract calls for the company to deliver up to 60 units a month starting after production approval by the Navy.
