German Parliament okays expanding troop operations in Afghanistan

Berlin, Oct 24, IRNA -- German Parliament approved extending the German troop contingent of the International Security and Assistance Force`s (ISAF) mandate beyond Kabul. Some 531 deputies voted for the bill, while 57 casted their balllots against it and five MPs abstained in the parliament`s lower house, the Bundestag. Berlin plans to send the first civilian reconstruction teams and up to 450 soldiers to the north Afghan region of Kunduz before the outbreak of the upcoming winter. Some 1,800 German ISAF troops are already deployed in the Afghan capital Kabul. OT/211 End
