Iraq: More U.S. Soldiers Wounded, As Number Of Attacks Increases

Baghdad, 22 October 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Two ambush bombings wounded U.S. soldiers today, as the commander of the U.S. forces reported an increase in attacks against U.S. troops in Iraq.

Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez said at a press conference that there has been an increase in the number of attacks on U.S. troops. The daily average of 20 to 25 has risen over the past few weeks to a peak of 35 attacks per day.

Early this morning, an improvised bomb exploded in a road tunnel in central Baghdad, hitting a Humvee and slightly wounding two U.S. soldiers.

In the flashpoint city of Al-Fallujah, west of Baghdad, a bomb attack hit a convoy of armed vehicles. Witnesses say four soldiers were removed on stretchers. The U.S. military had no immediate confirmation of that incident.
