
Iraq: Five Dead In Karbala Attack, Second Attack In Kirkuk
Karbala, 17 October 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Three U.S. military police and two Iraqi police officers were killed overnight when unknown assailants fired at them from rooftops in the central Shi'ite Muslim holy city of Karbala.
U.S. Major Ralph Manos, a military spokesman, confirmed the deaths. He says two U.S. military police were also wounded, along with five Iraqi police.
In Kirkuk, attackers fired several rocket-propelled grenades at U.S. soldiers before being forced to retreat late yesterday. U.S. Lieutenant Casey Thoreen today said no U.S. soldiers were injured or killed in the incident, which occured at a U.S. compund.
Thoreen said the attackers escaped but their car crashed into a wall and exploded. No other details were immediately known.
