IRNA
Islamabad, Oct 15, IRNA -- A top al-Qaeda man was among the eight suspects killed this month in operation by Pakistani armed forces in tribal areas, bordering Afghanistan, Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said on Wednesday. "Al-Qaeda man in the list of top 10 to 15 was among those killed," Rashid told a news conference in Islamabad. He did not disclose the name of the suspect. Eight al-Qaeda suspects were killed in the first ever major operation in South Waziristan tribal area on October 2nd. A total of 18 other suspects were arrested in the 12-hour operation. Two Pakistani soldiers were also killed in the operation. Pakistani military spokesman said all those killed were foreigners but failed to disclose their nationality. "I will not disclose his name at the moment but a reward for his arrest was announced," the minister said. He also said the action was against al-Qaeda and no local was killed in the operation. Replying to a question, Rashid said that the action in Waziristan was taken on the basis of `electronic intelligence`. "Pakistan is against terrorism and will now allow any group to operate from its territory," he said adding that innocent people will not be punished and there was no pressure on Pakistan. /TSH/AH/210
