INTRO: The Ugandan army says Lord's Resistance Army rebels killed as many 22 people and wounded more than a dozen late Monday in a busy trading town north of Kampala. Correspondent Alisha Ryu has details from our East Africa Bureau in Nairobi.

TEXT: Ugandan army spokesman, Major Shaban Bantariza says about 15 Lord's Resistance Army fighters entered a market place late Monday in the Lira district, 280-kilometers north of Kampala.

Major Bantariza says the men, armed with guns, clubs, and machetes, began attacking people who were eating and drinking in the market's open-air bars.

z/// BANTARIZA ACT ///

They killed some with clubs and they cut others down with machetes, and then they shot others with bullets.

/// END ACT ///

The attack follows last month's massacre of 10 people in another market, west of Lira district. That attack has also been blamed on the rebels.

The Lord's Resistance Army has been battling government forces and kidnapping civilians for 17 years across northern Uganda. Their cause for fighting is unclear. (SIGNED)
