INTRO: In Afghanistan, suspected Taleban insurgents have attacked a police station in the southeast - killing at least three security officers and capturing eight others. V-O-A's Michael Kitchen reports from Islamabad.

TEXT: The attack occurred in Zabul Province - the site of months of intense fighting between insurgent Taleban forces and a coalition of Afghan and U-S troops.

Zabul's deputy governor tells V-O-A several Taleban fighters were killed or injured during the clash, but the group took their casualties with them when they fled the scene.

The Taleban - accused of harboring al-Qaida terrorists - was ousted from power in 2001 by U-S-led coalition forces. Remnants of the group have been staging attacks and Afghan officials say the insurgents have regrouped across the border in Pakistan.

Afghan Interior Minister Ali Jalali:

/// JALALI ACT ///

What we see in Afghanistan, the insurgency is not from inside Afghanistan. It is coming from outside.

/// END ACT ///

Pakistan has stepped up efforts in recent weeks to flush the border region of militants posing a security risk to war-torn Afghanistan. (SIGNED)
