Iraq: Explosion Rocks Baghdad

Baghdad, 12 October 2003 (RFE/RL) -- An explosion believed to have been caused by two car bombs rocked the center of the Iraqi capital Baghdad today, causing casualties.

Details are still sketchy. Reports say the blast -- or blasts -- occurred at a checkpoint outside the Baghdad Hotel after police tried to stop two cars from approaching the building.

Mawaffak al-Rubai, a member of the U.S.-installed interim Iraqi Governing Council, told Al-Jazeera television that at least seven people were killed in the blast or blasts.

Many other people, including several Iraq policemen, were wounded in the incident.
