Pak opposition fears possible US strikes in tribal areas
IRNA
Islamabad, Oct 10, IRNA - The opposition parties in Pakistan on Friday feared the United States could unleash air raids in tribal areas for `checking terrorist elements`, urging local agencies to take care of the matter. Speaking at a news conference here at the Parliament House, the leaders of opposition parties flayed the US forces presence in Afghanistan and sounded apprehensions about its future policy towards the border region. The leaders of Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal, Pakistan Peoples` Party, Pakistan Muslim League and other parties spoke against America`s continued presence in the neighbouring country. "Even if some suspected elements are hiding in the areas, the local agencies and law-enforcement agencies should take care of them and not the outside forces," they contended. Liaquat Baloch, Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, lawmakers from the tribal areas and other opposition leaders said one day, the US could resort to air raids on Pakistan`s tribal areas, bordering Afghanistan, pretending to flush out terrorist elements. The ruling and opposition parties have been very vocal in criticising the United States operation against Afghanistan and Iraq. The opposition parties demanded of the government not to let possible US action in tribal areas at any cost. America says that some men of Al-Qaeda and Taliban might be hiding in the areas, bordering Afghanistan. A few days back, Pakistan`s forces carried out operation, killing 10 suspected Al-Qaeda elements and apprehending around 20 others. MHA/TSH/214 End
