BAE SYSTEMS Selects TNO's India To Meet Air Defence Needs
09 Oct 2003
BAE Systems C4ISR has awarded a contract to The Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) for the supply of the air defence planning tool, INDIA (INtercept DIAgrams). This followed an assessment of candidate systems during which INDIA was judged to offer the best mix of functionality, human interface, cost-effectiveness, adaptability, performance and hardware independence.
INDIA will be incorporated into BAE Systems tactical command software for use within the local warning segment in a mobile ground-based air defence system being provided to an export customer.
INDIA supports force deployment planning. It assesses the coverage provided by air defence assets and, in particular, intercept points and coverage based on a digital terrain database (Digital Land Mass System, DLMS) from the US Digital Mapping Agency that includes terrain elevation data and data of features (urban areas, forests, etc.).
Based on this database and the target altitude, mask and unmask positions are identified. The first, second etc., intercept opportunities can then be determined for every possible target track. INDIA takes into account sensor performance, weapons performance, mobility requirements, the available command & control elements and the threat parameters.
Information will be passed to the BAE Systems-designed GP3 application for display on map overlays and exploitation. The system design allows the use of INDIA to be restricted to specialists whilst the output can be made more widely available through GP3 functionality.
INDIA, initially developed for the Royal Netherlands Air Force, is an interactive air defence planning tool for intercept performance prediction. It provides an objective analysis of air defence deployment in both graphical (intercept diagram) and numerical (measures of effectiveness) modes. Being used by NATO's Analytical Air Defence Cell in Brussels, this contract award represents its first sale into the international defence market.
