US CENTCOM chief meets Musharraf

Islamabad, Oct 6, IRNA -- The commander of the US Central Command, Gen John P. Abizaid Monday met Pakistan`s President General Pervez Musharraf and discussed with him regional situation, official sources said. Sources said the two sides have discussed Pakistan-US cooperation in Afghanistan, particularly hunt for Al Qaeda fighters. They said Pakistan sought US help to further strengthening security of the its border with Afghanistan. General Abizaid who arrived in Islamabad Sunday on a two-day visit, will also meet the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Gen Mohammad Yousaf Khan. The United States wants Pakistani troops for Iraq but Islamabad pleads for international cover to any peacekeeping in the war-shattered Iraq. Pakistan is a close ally of the United States in war against al-Qaeda and Taliban in Afghanistan and US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage has praised Pakistan`s cooperation with the United States.
