12 Pakistanis killed in Indian firing -- PTV
IRNA
Islamabad, Oct 5, IRNA -- At least 12 civilians were killed and 15 others wounded when Indian troops fired shells overnight at areas in the Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, the state-run television reported. "The indiscriminate Indian firing, started yesterday and continued overnight, targeting civilian population in Neelam valley in Azad (free) Kashmir, and killing 12 people including four women," the PTV reported. Some of the injured were admitted to a local hospital while those seriously injured were shifted to a military hospital in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The Indian forces shelled Salakala, Shah Kot and Lala areas in the Neelam Valley. The firing also destroyed or damaged houses and also killed cattle heads, the PTV reported. Artillery duels across the 740-km (455-mile) ceasefire line dividing Kashmir between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan have continued despite tentative peace steps aimed at resolving decades of animosity. The South Asian rivals were on the brink of war last year over Indian statements that Pakistan arms and trains Muslims fighting Indian rule in Kashmir. Islamabad denies the charges and says it only extends diplomatic, political and moral support to Kashmiris. Ties have improved in recent months, but India has linked fresh talks to an end to attacks by armed Kashmiri groups. Pakistan and India have fought three wars, two over Kashmir, since their independence from the British colonial rule in 1947. TK/TSH/212 End
