Pakistan to get 60 US copters by December
IRNA
Islamabad, Oct 4, IRNA - The United States would sell 60 attack helicopters to Pakistan by December, local media reported Saturday. According to the daily Dawn, the Bush administration had given approval to sale of the helicopters to Islamabad. These choppers, including Cobra gunships, are meant to help Pakistan fight Taliban and Al-Qaeda in the tribal area (Pak-Afghan border), the newspaper said. Pakistan hopes the helicopters would be delivered by December and differences over US request for Pakistani troops for Iraq would not delay their delivery. Pakistan`s President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali strongly raised the arms imbalance with India during their meetings with American leadership. The newspaper said, after talks with Jamali, US Secretary of State Colin Powell told Pakistani newsmen in Washington that his country would play its role in maintaining the balance of power in South Asia. Premier Jamali is on a ten-day visit to the United States on the invitation of US President George W Bush following a visit by President Musharraf to US a week earlier to address the UN General Assembly where he also met with US president.
