Kosovo: UN Peacekeeper Seriously Injured After Attack

Pristina, 1 October 2003 (RFE/RL) -- A UN policemen suffered serious head injuries today when a man attacked him with a metal bar outside a police station in Kosovo.

UN police spokesman Derek Chappel said the policeman, a German national, had been flown back to Germany for medical treatment.

Chappel said the attacker, a Kosovar Albanian, was arrested immediately. He said the attacker seemed to be mentally disturbed, and had a long-standing hatred of police.

UN and NATO-led peacekeepers have been deployed in Kosovo since 1999, when a NATO air strike ended a Serbian crackdown on ethnic Albanians. Some 4,000 international police serve alongside a 5,500-strong local force supervised by the UN Mission in Kosovo.
