British army chief on a two-day visit to Kashmir

Srinagar, Sept 26, IRNA -- The British chief of defense staff, Gen. Michael Walker, is now in India, touring the dividing Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) to review the situation on one of the world`s highly militarized frontiers on Thursday. India`s Defense ministry sources said Gen Walker who arrived here on a two-day visit Thursday was taken to the Uri sector in north Kashmir. On Friday, Gen Walker will visit South Kashmir in Anantnag, which is known as Islamabad in Kashmir and will also be given first hand information on how Indian troops conduct Army operations against militants in Kashmir. He will also hold talks with Chief of Indian Army, GOC 15th Core command in Kashmir and leave back to Delhi Friday evening. Earlier Walker arrived in New Delhi Tuesday night from Islamabad and has visited the LoC from the Pakistani side and was the first chief of a western military given a tour of the LoC by India. India has been granting conditional access to foreign military officials to visit Kashmir and brief them on the situation. The British general`s visit comes at a time when American Special forces are engaged in a three-week long military exercises with Indian troops in strategic Kashmir region of Ladakh bordering China and Pakistan. This also follows series of visits by Western diplomats to Kashmir in recent weeks. IND/216 End
