Iraq: Governing Council Member Shot, Critically Wounded

Baghdad, 20 September 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Gunmen opened fire today on a car carrying one of three women on Iraq's U.S.-appointed Governing Council, seriously wounding her and at least three others.

Reports say Aquila al-Hashimi is in critical condition after being shot in the abdomen.

In a statement, the top U.S. administrator in Iraq, L. Paul Bremer, said he is "shocked and saddened" by what he called a "horrific and cowardly act."

Al-Hashimi's car was ambushed by armed men close to her home in western Baghdad. Iraqi police and agents from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation are investigating.

Al-Hashimi had been due to travel to the U.S. as one of the members of the Iraqi delegation attending next week's UN General Assembly meeting.
