SINGAPORE -- Ships from USS Nimitz Strike Group, including the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11, USS Princeton (CG 59) and USS Bridge (AOE 10) began a port visit here Sept. 12.

Singapore, filled with many sights and experiences, is an island that spans 26 miles east to west and 14 miles north to south. Singapore consists of one main island and 60 smaller islands.

On the island, Sailors can enjoy shopping at cultural centers and visiting historical sights. Sailors will also have the opportunity to enjoy a fine dining atmosphere with various cuisines for every taste, including Chinese, Malay, Indian food and more.

Nimitz Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) has arranged a variety of tours to accommodate most Sailor's interests, including night safaris to the Singapore Zoo, a trip to Sentosa Waterworld, located on a resort island featuring over 2,000 types of marine life, and the Singapore By Night tour on which Sailors can enjoy an authentic dinner, a trip to the business district and a view of Singapore's night skyline.

This port visit offers Sailors a completely different atmosphere and culture than they have experienced while in other ports and it is sure to be an experience they will not soon forget. Nearly 6,500 Sailors from the Nimitz Strike Group will have the unique opportunity to venture into the city to take in the sights and sounds of Singapore.

USS Nimitz' Religious Ministries Department has coordinated community-service projects in Singapore designed to lend a helpful hand to the local community and strengthen ties between American and Singapore cultures.

The Nimitz Strike Group has been deployed since March and is currently conducting operations in support of the global war on terrorism and U.S. commitment to the Pacific region.
