Iraq: 10 Police Reportedly Killed By U.S. Troops In Shooting Incident

Al-Fallujah, Iraq; 12 September 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Local police and witnesses said about 10 Iraqi security personnel were killed and at least five others injured when U.S. soldiers mistakenly opened fire on them. The U.S. military has not confirmed the reports.

According to the reports, police from Al-Fallujah were chasing a car without licence plates carrying a group of armed men when it passed through a U.S. checkpoint just outside the city.

The U.S. troops opened fire on both the car and the police pick-up trucks after they failed to stop.

Al-Fallujah, a mostly Sunni Muslim city, has been the scene of frequent clashes involving U.S. troops.
