EADS technology protects armoured vehicles - New electronic self-protection system presented

Munich, le 09 septembre 2003

The latest technologies from EADS significantly improve the protection afforded to armoured vehicles against attack from guided munitions, consequently increasing the protection of personnel and material in international deployments.

As reported by the company on Tuesday, the German Federal Office for Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) recently conducted successful repeat testing of the new multi-functional selfprotection system MUSS, on a Leopard II battle tank at the Meppen military training area. Thus, MUSS is the only self-protection system in the world whose effectiveness has been proven under realistic deployment conditions. The work carried out on MUSS is undertaken by EADS in cooperation with KMW (system integration) and Buck (pyrotechnic countermeasures). The future Business Unit EADS Defence Electronics will be responsible for warning sensors, central computers and electronic countermeasures.

“The new technologies that we employ here, open up previously unsuspected possibilities for the protection of armoured vehicles against threats, but equally also aircraft, helicopters or ships”, declared Johann Heitzmann, head of the new EADS Defence Electronics business unit (in formation). MUSS comprises three main components: one element is the warning sensors, which detect the guided missile or laser beam directed at the vehicle and report this to a central computer. This in turn activates appropriate countermeasures preventing the vehicle from being hit.

EADS Defence Electronics (DE), as part of the newly restructured Defence & Security Systems division, will be one of the most important manufacturers of radar, avionics and EW systems for all branches of the armed forces. Amongst other projects, DE will contribute decisively to electronic self-protection systems of the Eurofighter, the A400M transport aircraft and the helicopters Tiger and NH90. Moreover, the unit will suppliy ground and ship-borne radars as well as electronic subsystems for a multitude of airborne platforms and naval vessels.

EADS is the second-largest aerospace and defence company in the world, with a turnover of € 29.9 billion for the year 2002 and over 100,000 employees. Almost all of its divisions are amongst the market leaders. As a system integrator, EADS is one of the few companies worldwide with the resources to combine different products and technologies for the creation of complete systems and to provide the associated services. EADS encompasses the aircraft manufacturer Airbus, the world’s largest helicopter company Eurocopter, and the MBDA joint venture, which is the world’s second-largest guided missile producer.
