BAE SYSTEMS To Replace Satellite Communications Radomes
09 Sep 2003
BAE Systems C4ISR has been awarded a contract by the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence to supply a substantial number of its innovative self-standing fabric radomes to replace equipment recently redeployed to meet operational requirements.
Managing Director of C4ISR’s Christchurch-based Communications & Defence Infrastructure business, Paul Laity, commented “We are proud that our radomes performed so well in supporting network enabling operations in recent operations and that they can now be described as combat-proven.”
The company originally developed this lightweight rapid erection radome, in a partnership with Cameron Balloons Limited which began in 2000, for use in the UK/TSC503 satellite communications programme in challenging tactical operations. It offers the user a significant capability availability advantage by providing a shield against extreme wind and temperature conditions.
The radomes feature an air-inflated envelope measuring eight metres in diameter and six metres high. They can be erected in one hour using a single fan inflation system requiring low operating power. The system can withstand a maximum wind speed of 36 metres per second (80mph) and temperatures ranging from -40C to +50C.
Some of the radomes successfully used in the Middle East theatre have been returned to BAE Systems for evaluation of the impact of hostile environments on the equipments.
UK/TSC503 is a compact multi-role tactical satellite communications system providing in-theatre users with world-wide access to strategic infrastructure networks.
