ElBaradei urges a nuclear weapons-free Middle East
IRNA
Berlin, Sept 2, IRNA -- The head of the UN nuclear watchdog agency called on Tuesday for the creation of a Middle East region, free of nuclear weapons. "The solution is to move towards a nuclear weapons-free zone in the Middle East," Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohammad ElBaradei told IRNA when asked about Israel`s nuclear military threat for Iran and the rest of the Mideast region. "A cornerstone of the Middle East should be a nuclear weapons-free zone. There are countries that believe that Israel should sign the NPT as a confidence-building measure pending the establishment of a comprehensive settlement in the Mideast," he added, while pointing to the "high regional instability". Israel has stubbornly refused to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty despite international pressure. OT/210 End
