Myanmar seeks Indian help to build up its Air Force
IRNA
New Delhi, Sept 2, IRNA -- Myanmar sought India`s cooperation in building up its Air Force on Monday as Commander in Chief of Myanmar, Major General Myat Hein held wide ranging discussions with Indian Air Chief Marshal S.Krishnaswamy, local press reported here on Tuesday. The Myanmar Air Chief is also likely to meet Indian Army Chief N.C.Vij and Naval Chief Madhvendra Singh. Hein`s visit coincides with the departure to Yangon of Madvendra Singh as head of a high level naval delegation to seek operational access for Indian warships to berth and refuel at Myanmar ports. This proposal, if accepted by the Myanmar military junta, will allow Indian warships to travel greater distances to protect its maritime interests. Myanmar Air Chief is also seeking Indian Air Force (IAF) assistance for setting up Aviation University in Myanmar. During his stay here, Hein would visit IAF bases in Jamnagar, Pune, Hyderabad and Agra. Hein`s visit is significant as India has been sending arms shipments, which include mortars, artillery pieces and heavy arms, to Myanmar since 2002. /213 End
