Polish defense minister wraps up Tehran visit

Tehran, Sept 1, IRNA -- Polish Minister of Defense Jerzy Szmajdzinski wrapped up his two-day visit to Iran and left here on Monday. Szmajdzinski was officially seen off by Iran`s Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani. At the conclusion of the second round of talks between Iranian and Polish ministers, the two sides stressed formation of joint working groups in order to continue bilateral defense and security cooperation. Shamkhani termed the Polish minister`s visit to Iran as an important step in the establishment of structural defense ties between the two countries. "Various technical and educational potentials of Iran and Poland provide suitable grounds for establishment of bilateral defense ties," he said. He pointed to Iran`s constructive role in the management of regional crises and restoration of stability and said, "The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to use all its potentials in order to establish sustainable peace in the region and the world through effective cooperation with those countries interested in such trend." Szmajdzinski, for his part, lauded Iran`s effective role and position in the establishment of peace and stability in the region and said, "Bilateral talks held during this visit would play a determining role in Poland`s further awareness on Iran`s valuable performance and status in the region." "We are determined to promote defense relations with Iran through enhancement of exchange of regular visits and formation of joint working groups," the Polish minister said. He expressed satisfaction over the outcome of his visit to Iran and highlighted the measures adopted by Poland to establish common understanding with regional countries regarding the country`s presence in Iraq. "Current events in Iraq show that establishment of a secure and stable situation in Iraq is the most important current need of the country," Szmajdzinski said. He termed his talks with political, defense and security officials of Iran as "very constructive, friendly and transparent" and said, "We would continue such talks with other influential countries in the region." Polish Minister of Defense Jerzy Szmajdzinski, heading a high-ranking defense-security delegation, arrived here Saturday night to discuss various issues of mutual interest, possible avenues for bolstering of bilateral ties in the fields of defense and security cooperation, exchange views on ways to reduce tension in the Middle East region as well as cooperation of various countries in the establishment of regional and international security. During his stay here, he held separate meetings with senior Iranian officials including President Mohammad Khatami, his Iranian counterpart Ali Shamkhani, Iran`s Interior Minister Abdolvahed Mousavi Lari and Secretary of Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Hassan Rowhani.
