Major Defence Contract: EADS strengthens its partnership in Greece
Amsterdam, 01 September 2003
EADS welcomes the decision of the Greek government to purchase the European NH 90 military transport helicopter. The Hellenic Ministry of Defence has placed 20 firm orders and taken 14 options for the NH 90.
According to Philippe Camus and Rainer Hertrich, the CEOs of EADS, "This is a further proof of the trust of the Greek authorities in EADS as a global and longstanding partner".
"The decision of the Greek government to join the NH 90 community strengthens Greece's position in the European defence integration, and as a NATO member", Camus and Hertrich pointed out. "This new contract demonstrates impressively the outstanding export potential of the NH 90 programme and of our defence product range."
"This new success comes in addition to a long series of cooperation projects in Greece which position EADS as a major aeronautic partner of this country", the CEOs continued. The Hellas Sat satellite, which will be used to broadcast the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, the strategic air-to-ground Scalp missile for the Hellenic Air Force and the upgrade programme of the Hellenic F-4E Phantom fighters, are only a few examples of EADS references in Greece.
"This new step in an enlarged partnership between EADS and the Greek Ministry of Defence will also strengthen our first-class cooperation with Greek industry, in particular with the Hellenic Aerospace Industry" said Jean-Paul Gut, Head of EADS International.
The negotiation of this contract has been successfully led under the leadership of Eurocopter with the full support of EADS, on behalf of NH Industries. EADS has been 62.5 percent share in the programme through its 100 percent subsidiary Eurocopter.
"The NH 90 success is a further important step to reach our strategic target to increase the share of our defence revenues from 20 to 30 percent of our total revenues", said Philippe Camus and Rainer Hertrich.
With the signature of the NH 90 contract with Greece, the recent EADS success story in the international defence business continues. EADS had registered the largest order in its history, worth EUR 20 billion, for the A400M military transport aircraft in May 2003. In August 2003, EADS welcomed Austria as the fifth customer of the Eurofighter combat aircraft; EADS is confident that Greece will follow soon.
EADS is the second largest aerospace and defence company in the world with revenues of € 29.9 billion in the year 2002 and a workforce of more than 100,000. It is a systems integrator and as such EADS is one of the few companies worldwide capable of combining various products and technologies to form complete systems and offering the associated services. The EADS Group includes the aircraft manufacturer Airbus, the world's largest helicopter supplier Eurocopter and the joint venture MBDA, the second largest missile producer in the global market. EADS is the major partner in the Eurofighter consortium, is the prime contractor for the Ariane launcher, develops the A400M military transport aircraft and is the largest industrial partner for the European satellite navigation system Galileo. EADS has more than 70 sites in France, Germany, Great Britain and Spain and is active in many regions worldwide, amongst them America, Russia and Asia.
