USS Blue Ridge in Yokosuka after exercise, port visits

YOKOSUKA, Japan -- The U.S. Navy's Seventh Fleet command-and-control ship, USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19), and the embarked Commander, Seventh Fleet staff, returned here Sept. 1 after nearly a month at sea.

The ship is back from 29 days at sea making three port visits in the Republic of Korea (ROK) and participating in extensive training and exercises.

Blue Ridge pulled into Pyongtaek on Aug. 9-11 for a regularly scheduled port visit. Blue Ridge and Seventh Fleet Sailors sampled Korean culture and cuisine, and some volunteered their time to Project Handclasp, a community service project.

The ship also made stops in Chinhae on Aug. 16-17, and in Pusan on Aug. 23-24.

Blue Ridge and Seventh Fleet Sailors, along with members of the ROK navy, participated in Ulchi Focus Lens (UFL) 2003. UFL 2003, held Aug. 17-29, was a combined and joint computer simulation-driven exercise.

Blue Ridge is forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, and is commanded by Capt. J. Stephen Maynard.

The Seventh Fleet area of responsibility for U.S. Navy operations encompasses 52 million square miles of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. On average, there are 50 ships, 200 aircraft and approximately 20,000 Sailors operating in the area.
