INTRO: The United States is condemning the twin car bomb explosions in Bombay that killed at least 46 people and wounded more than 100. Washington correspondent Meredith Buel has details.
TEXT: Secretary of State Colin Powell telephoned India's Minister of External Affairs, Yashwant Sinha to condemn the bomb blasts in Bombay.
State Department spokesman Philip Reeker called the bombings "senseless and cowardly."
/// REEKER ACT ///
The secretary expressed our outrage at these attacks and our condolences to the Indian government and to the Indian people and particularly to the families of victims and to those injured.
/// END ACT ///
Mr. Reeker said the United States hopes those responsible for the bombings will be identified quickly and brought to justice.
In the past India has blamed such attacks on militants backed by neighboring Pakistan.
Islamabad quickly condemned the latest bombings as an act of terror.
One of the bombs exploded at an historic landmark known as the Gateway of India while the second blast occurred near a crowded neighborhood of jewelry stores. (Signed)
