INTRO: Provincial officials say Afghan and U-S forces have scored a major victory against a large force of suspected Taleban guerrillas. V-O-A's Michael Kitchen reports from Islamabad.

TEXT: Officials in southeastern Afghanistan's Zabul Province are reporting up to 50 militant insurgents were killed during a large-scale mountain battle near the town of Daichopan.

The officials say the militants were fighters loyal to the ousted Taleban regime and numbered in the hundreds, making it one of the largest engagements since the overthrow of the Taleban in 2001.

Many of the dead were reportedly killed during U-S air-strikes called in by the combined Afghan and U-S ground force.

Zabul province is the site of several recent militant attacks, the latest occurring Saturday, in which at least five Afghan soldiers were reported killed. (SIGNED)
