Release Date: 8/25/2003

Intelligence Specialist 1st Class Jonathan Crosson, USS Cowpens public affairs

HONG KONG -- USS Cowpens (CG 63) arrived in the Far East port of Hong Kong on Aug. 20, to enjoy the opportunity for some long-anticipated rest and recreation in this "gateway to China."

The port visit gives the Cowpens' crew of more than 360 sailors a chance to experience the culture and hospitality of Hong Kong, sightsee, and participate in community-service projects with their hosts. Several crewmembers have volunteered to paint the roofs of the

Fenwick Pier library and McDonald's. In addition, local families will host over 90 Cowpens Sailors for an evening so that the crew may get an inside look at life in Hong Kong. Community relations extend to a basketball game that will be played between Cowpens' winning team and the Hong Kong International School.

Cowpens, a Ticonderoga-class Aegis guided-missile cruiser, is a multi-mission platform capable of supporting anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. The 9,600-ton warship can support carrier strike groups, amphibious forces or can operate independently.

Cowpens is permanently forward deployed to the western pacific and operates out of Yokosuka, Japan.
