CAMP PALAN, Republic of Korea(August 22, 2003) -- Thousands of miles separated from the U.S., some Marines and Sailors here have been longing for the familiar snip of their personal barber's clippers, or the soothing hands of a massage therapist.

Although it may not be the same thing, the local Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) have provided the Marines and Sailors participating in Ulchi Focus Lens 2003 with a crew of four to provide haircuts, facials and massages.

It is not uncommon for the UFL Marines and Sailors to work 12, 14, even 16 hours shifts, so haircuts and methods relaxation are hard to come by.

"The need arose to provide barber services at the Palan life support area due to the operational tempo of the exercise," said Capt. Michael McDaniel, Camp Palan commandant.

The services began Aug. 20. Since then, the barbershop/massage center has become a hotspot for personnel here.

Certified hair stylists can be scheduled for appointments for the 25 female Marines and Sailors aboard Camp Palan.

Haircuts are $6.50, and facials and massages are $4.15, and the compliments have been pouring in.

"It's the best haircut I've ever had in my life," said Pfc. Robert Dea, combat videographer, Combined Marine Forces Command, and recipient of a simultaneous haircut/rubdown. "I'm coming back next week for another one."

For many, a "spa," as it has been referred to here, would be an unthinkable service that would be provided during field duty. However, ask, and ye shall receive.

"As the camp commandant, it is my mission to provide those services that have been heavily requested. If these services help the productivity in the bunker, I am all for them," said McDaniel.

Still, haircuts, facials, massages - in the field?

"This is definitely one of those experiences an infantry officer has to see to believe," said McDaniel.
