Hamilton Sundstrand to supply electric systems for X-45C aircraft

WINDSOR LOCKS, USA- North America, California, Aug 19, 2003

The Boeing Company has selected Hamilton Sundstrand as a key supplier for the X-45C Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) being developed in the joint unmanned combat air system (J-UCAS) program to meet both U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy UCAV demonstration requirements.

Hamilton Sundstrand Electric Systems will provide systems for primary electric power generation, flight-critical electric power generation, and electric power conversion.

“We are excited that Boeing has selected Hamilton Sundstrand’s state-of-the-art electrical systems technology for the X-45C,” said Mark Spana, general manager for Hamilton Sundstrand Electric Systems’ Defense System Enterprise. “The X-45C is a revolutionary weapon system, and we are thrilled that Boeing will use our 270-volt dc power generation, power conversion and controls technology to support the vehicle’s ‘more-electric aircraft’ architecture.”

The “more electric aircraft” concept is intended to make greater use of electrical systems, rather than traditional hydraulic and pneumatic systems, to operate aircraft accessory equipment.

The X-45C’s first flight is scheduled for early 2006.

The X-45C, designed for hazardous missions such as attacking air defenses on enemy terrain, is a derivative of the X-45A, which made its first test flight on May 22, 2002, at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., and the X-45B, a larger and more capable prototype. In April of this year, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) asked Boeing to modify the X-45B into the X-45C to meet the needs of the Navy as well as the Air Force. While the X-45A demonstrators are currently verifying the core functionality of the software necessary for planned UCAV operations, the X-45C for the Air Force and Navy will demonstrate the military utility and operational value of the UCAV system.

Hamilton Sundstrand is the premier supplier of 270-volt dc electric power generation, conversion and distribution systems with products on the Lockheed MartinF-22 and F-35 and the Boeing/Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche.

Hamilton Sundstrand, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX), is headquartered in Windsor Locks, Conn. Among the world’s largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and industrial products, the company designs, manufactures and services aerospace systems and provides integrated systems solutions for commercial, regional, corporate and military aircraft. It is also a major supplier for global space programs.
